Prologue
Spartan: We must move the herd! The humans are after us! We narrowly escaped last time! Flare please listen to me!
Flare: No! It is too dangerous! New foals are on the way... Besides here is safe enough! The humans won't find us.
Spartan: Please. I need you to agree, the herd won't respect my decision if you don't agree. This little valley our hide out won't last long with this big of a herd, please my love...
Flare: (hesitates) If...if you think it is the best thing to do for our herd.
Spartan: I do. It is for the best. We shall move farther west...the humans haven't gone that far. We'll live near the mountains, in a valley that I know of.
Flare: Lets go tell the herd. My time is coming near...I feel the foal shifting. Let us tell them before I...leave.
Spartan: (grins and nibbles at her mane) You shall be a wonderful mother. Come. We shall tell them now.
Chapter One: Parting is more than Sweet Sorrow, it is the Beginning
Buck: Do we have to leave?
Belle: Yes! Weed fer' Brains! Can't you see...the valley it's dying. It can't sustain all of us. (nips at his withers playfully)
Buck: (half rears) Hey! Yeah I can see that but...
Belle: (playfulness vanishes) I know. We were raised her but this is the life of a herd. We stay in a safe place for a little while and then when it becomes dangerous or not suited for the herd we move on. That's life Bucky.
Buck: Don't call me Bucky! (nips at Belle's face and canters off with Belle in hot pursuit)
Spartan: (paces back and forth) I'm worried it's been more than a week. She has never taken this long before. She was only a week with Cobalt! It's been two weeks now!
Honey: (snorts a bit amused by the young studs anxiousness) She'll be fine. Flare is always fine, that mare can take care of herself. Just remember that this is her last foal in this territory. Flare is probably just showing the young one around and taking in her last looks of things. She knows we can never return back here. Give her a few more hours to come back before we leave.
Spartan: (stops pacing and stares wistfully at the horizon) Your probably right. I'll give her a few more hours before we leave. (starts pacing again, the whites of his eyes showing a little) But what if another stallion got her and the foal and they killed the foal, what if...
Honey: Spartan. Calm down. She'll come when she's ready. Matter of fact she's probably on her way right now pushing that little one as fast as she can. (hides a smile as she sees Flare and her new colt on the horizon)
Spartan: (Stops and looks at the palomino mare) I hope your right. (turns to look behind him once again) Flare! (gallops off to meet his mate)
Flare: Spartan! (breaks into a canter and meets him) I've missed you so.
Spartan: And I you. What has taken you so long to come back? (nuzzles Flare affectionately)
Flare: I wanted to show the foal around before we...leave. I wanted to remember old memories... (Foal who has been hiding in his mother's tail peeks out then darts quickly back in)
Spartan: Our foal is beautiful. What have you named it? (Looks at his foal with bright, curious eyes)
Flare: (Flattens her ears and bites Spartan's shoulder)
'It' is a colt and
your son. I haven't named him yet. I thought we should name our foal together.
Spartan: (Rubs shoulder, regretful of his words) Ow. Yes, together as we always have done. So...what about Flash?
Flare: No. It doesn't quite fit...(looks at her son thoughtfully)
Spartan:(Looks thoughtfully at his foal for a moment and then meets Flare's eyes)
Together: Dakota
Dakota: (Blinks and opens his mouth to say something then closes it again and looks bashfully at the herd.) D-dakota.
(Herd starts to press close around them, Nightmare hanging back and the three year olds jostling for a better position.)
Honey: Congratulations!
Sora: You'll be a great mother as you are a lead mare.
Hoku: Yes, I agree.
Nightmare: (says nothing but stares at the rest of the herd)
Belle: Move over Buck! Your blocking my way! I wanna see!
Buck: No you move! I'm the one who can't see!
(They continue to argue)
Flower: Such a cute little one, the first foal of the year.
Spartan: I am proud father today as I am when all my foals are born.
Flare: As I am proud to be his mother.
Dakota: Hi. (Sticks to his mother like a shadow)
